10 Great Reasons Why You Should Smile

Here at Ocean Orthodontics we love creating beautiful smiles. Just a small muscle movement is all it takes to turn up the sides of your mouth, and boy does a smile pack a surprising amount of power!

Smiling stimulates our brain’s reward mechanisms in a way that even chocolate, a well-regarded pleasure-inducer, cannot even match. In a study conducted in the UK, British researchers found that one smile can provide the same level of brain stimulation as up to 2000 chocolate bars. They also found that smiling can be as stimulating as receiving up to 16,000 Pounds Sterling in cash which is our equivalent of nearly $30000!

Smiling is not just a universal means of communicating, it’s also a frequent one. More than 30% of us smile more than 20 times a day and less than 14% of us smile less than 5 times a day. In fact, those with the greatest superpowers are actually children, who smile as many as 400 times per day! Now that’s a whole lot of chocolate bars right there!

Here are just 10 reasons why you should flash your gorgeous Ocean Orthodontics smile:

1. Smiling Makes You Happy

Well it turns out that the simple act of smiling sends a message to your brain that you're happy. And when you're happy, your body pumps out all kinds of feel-good endorphins. It has been documented that when people mimic different emotional expressions, their bodies produce physiological changes that reflect the emotion too, such as changes in heart and breathing rate. Psychologists have even found that if you grin for just 60 seconds, no matter how fake or forced it may be, it releases serotonin which tricks the body into making you feel happy.

2. Natural Drug

Rethink having those chocolate bars. As it was mentioned before, one smile can provide the same level of brain stimulation and happiness as up to 2000 chocolate bars.

3. Lowers Your Blood Pressure

Lots of smiling can actually make you healthier. Smiling has documented therapeutic effects, and has been associated with reduced stress and anxiety hormone levels (like cortisol, adrenaline, and dopamine) which in turn lowers blood pressure.

4. Boosts Your Immune System

Many medical studies have found that smiling lowers your heart rate, steadies breathing and relaxes the body, which results in a stronger immune system. So smile more to ward off colds and stay healthy.

5. Smiling Can Make Others Happy

"When you're smiling, the whole world smiles with you." Ever heard that song, made famous by Louis Armstrong? Well, it's true. Research shows that smiling is contagious. Ever been around someone who just had something fantastic happen to them? Isn't it almost impossible not to feel good too? Studies show that something as simple as seeing a friend smile can activate the muscles in your face to make that same expression, without you even being aware that you are doing it.

6. You’ll Look More Youthful

Smiling is a natural facelift! It plumps up the cells in your skin and gives you a radiant glow. In fact, a study conducted that found that 69% of people find women more attractive when they smile than when they are wearing makeup.

7. Increase Your Productivity.

Smiling can diminish negativity which in turn revitalises and boosts your productivity. Studies have proved that a few minutes of smiling and laughter motivates people to work harder and can even enhance creativity.

8. Build Trust With A Smile

Studies have proved that a genuine smile increases the trust that the recipient of that smile feels. In fact, the bigger your smile (not a crazy smile, but a big approachable smile), the more others will trust you. Building trust is an absolute must for business and individual success, and when you give your customers a warm smile, they are much more likely to trust you.

9. And Live Longer

When you are smiling, it’s difficult not to be positive and a positive attitude has been shown to increase life expectancy. Studies have shown that you can add up to seven more years to your life by genuinely smiling often. Who doesn't want that?

10. A Quote To Smile About

“A smile costs nothing, but creates much. It enriches those who receive, without impoverishing those who give. It happens in a flash and the memory of it sometimes lasts forever.” - Dale Carnegie, How to Win Friends and Influence People.

So smiling and laughter helps blood flow, lowers blood sugar levels, reduces stress and improves sleep. It may also raise the level of infection-fighting antibodies in the body, which helps boost your immune system and does so much more. So the moral of this story is smile and laugh often! =)
