Dr Arun Shailendran

Specialist Orthodontist

Dr Arun Shailendran graduated with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery degree and practiced general dentistry for ten years. He began pursuing his Doctor of Clinical Dentistry degree at the University of Queensland in 2017. 

During those three years of full-time specialist orthodontic training, Dr Shailendran presented his research work at the American Association of Orthodontists conference, the Australian Society of Orthodontists meetings and at the Orthodontic Society of Ireland conference. At that conference, he also secured a podium finish at the Seamus Keating Award competition. 

Dr Shailendran has obtained additional specialist membership diplomas from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons. 

He also holds the distinctions of being a:

  • Registered Specialist Orthodontist with the Dental Board of Australia
  • Member of the Australian Society of Orthodontists
  • Member of the American Association of Orthodontists
  • Member of the European Orthodontic Society
  • Member of the World Federation of Orthodontists

Dr Shailendran believes that the best patient outcomes are obtained by combining high-quality research with excellent clinical acumen. In order to continue providing this high level of care, he continues to conduct research and regularly attends both national and international orthodontic meetings.

Dr Shailendran loves to teach and has been teaching both the undergraduate dentistry students and postgraduates in Orthodontics at the University of Queensland. 

Raised in India, Dr Shailendran moved to Australia in 2009. Outside the office, he enjoys spending time with his young daughter, playing backyard cricket. He also loves to travel and explore new cultures around the world.

Practicing orthodontics enables Dr Shailendran to watch his patients’ smiles transform right before his eyes. The most rewarding part, however, is becoming a part of children’s lives.

Dr Shailendran loves getting to know his patients’ families, their friends and their pets as he watches these children grow and helps them to develop healthy smiles.

Dr Rachel Glancy

Dental Practitioner

Dr Glancy has over 21 years of post-qualification orthodontic experience, having received her orthodontic qualification in 1998 from Oregon Health Sciences University, one of the leading US orthodontic schools.

Since relocating with her family to the Sunshine Coast in 2013, Dr Glancy has attained her dental registration and is in the process of pursuing her Australian orthodontic specialist registration.

Over her 21 years in practice, she has attended hundreds of hours of continuing education courses, treated thousands of patients and established some of the most rewarding relationships with her patients of her life.  Her goal is to provide quality treatment with education and collaboration between all those around her. She feels this allows each person to attain the ideal outcome for them specifically.

To Dr Glancy, the best reward is attaining your goals together and seeing her patients smile their brightest the day their treatment is completed.

Dr Patrick Hannan

Specialist Orthodontist

Dr Patrick Hannan attended Aquinas College Southport, Queensland. He completed year 12 in 1975 as the Dux of the School. He completed his B.D.Sc (Bachelor of Dental Science) through the University of Queensland in 1980. He then worked as a District Dental Officer in the School Dental Service from 1981-1986.

Dr Hannan achieved his Fellowship from the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons in 1985 and his Master’s degree in Orthodontics at the University of Melbourne in 1988. 

Some of Dr Hannan's distinctions include:

Formally Dr Hannan served as the president of the Australian Society of Orthodontists and has presented several lectures to various groups all over Australia. Dr Hannan has held several positions within the Australian Dental Association’s sub-branches over the years.

Dr Hannan is a keen sailor and has competed in the annual Brisbane to Gladstone yacht race on several occasions. He also enjoys playing the guitar and learning French in his spare time.

Dr David Vautin

Specialist Orthodontist

Dr David Vautin grew up in the western suburbs of Brisbane.  He gained his Bachelor of Dental Science at the University of Queensland in 1979. After that, he worked for Queensland Health in various capacities including Senior Dentist in Pediatric Dentistry (children’s dentistry) and later Senior Dentist in Orthodontics.  He was one of only two candidates accepted into the MDSc course in Orthodontics in 1985 and he graduated from that in 1987.

In 1989, Dr Vautin accepted the opportunity to enter orthodontic practice with Dr David Robertson on the Sunshine Coast. When Dr Robertson retired in 1990, Dr Vautin purchased the practice which eventually became a part of the Ocean Orthodontics family. 

Dr Vautin constantly strives for excellence in his practice. He focuses on delivering superior treatment and service to his patients above all else. This achievement is borne out by the fact that most of our referrals now come from patients, past-patients and their friends and family.
Dr Vautin is an active member of:

  • Queensland Branch of the Australian Society of Orthodontists
  • American Association of Orthodontists

Over her 21 years in practice, she has attended hundreds of hours of continuing education courses, treated thousands of patients and established some of the most rewarding relationships with her patients of her life.  Her goal is to provide quality treatment with education and collaboration between all those around her. She feels this allows each person to attain the ideal outcome for them specifically.

To Dr Glancy, the best reward is attaining your goals together and seeing her patients smile their brightest the day their treatment is completed.

Debbie Hannan

Treatment Co-ordinator

Debbie is one of our treatment co-ordinators, a role we have specifically created with Ocean Orthodontics patients in mind. Treatment co-ordinators are highly experienced team members who provide new patients with all of the information they need to make informed choices relating to their own or their child’s treatment. Our treatment co-ordinators are with you every step of the way as you work towards achieving a beautiful smile.

Debbie has been with Ocean Orthodontics since 1998 and has been a registered nurse, midwife and dental nurse. She has completed her Diploma of Management as well as various different courses in Human Resource Management and Business Management.

Karen Brodbeck

Practice Manager

Karen co-ordinates our office and oversees our entire terrific team. She works directly with our orthodontists and clinical director to ensure that all aspects of Ocean Orthodontics run efficiently. If you have any questions that our admin team cannot answer, please let our practice manager Karen know and she will be sure to address your concerns.

Karen has been at Ocean Orthodontics since 2002 and has a Diploma of Management and is completing her Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. She is a highly experienced practice manager and attends various practice management conferences throughout the year. She also regularly attends various Human Resource Management and Business Management conferences throughout the year. Karen has worked in the administration and management field for over 20 years and is an expert in dental practice management.

Karen enjoys cooking and spending time with her loving family.

Joanne Lameree

Treatment Co-ordinator / Practice Manager

Joanne is another one of our valued treatment co-ordinators, here to help your treatment plan unfold seamlessly.

Joanne has experience in both the administration and clinical side of orthodontics, making her a perfect fit for our treatment co-ordinator role. Joanne has completed her Certificate III in Dental Assisting and has been a devoted Ocean Orthodontics employee for over ten years.

She has two beautiful girls that keep her busy in her time off and she loves to spend time fishing and swimming at the beach with them.

Ai-Vi Nguyen

Hygienist

An oral health therapist is an expert in diagnosing oral health concerns and is qualified to clean and maintain orthodontic braces and assist the orthodontist in various procedures.

Ai-Vi started at Ocean Orthodontics in 2010 and has a Bachelor of Oral Health from the University of Queensland and has gained extensive experience through her work with various dental practices throughout Australia.

In her free time, she enjoys fishing, adventure sports and trying out all kinds of unique foods.

Emily Ball

Clinical Director/ Senior Dental Assistant

As Clinical Director, Emily oversees all aspects of our clinical team and ensures every patient receives the same high level of service they should expect at Ocean Orthodontics. She helps establish procedures that make Ocean Orthodontics a leader in setting the highest standards of service, communication and clinical results.

Our dental assistants are vital in assisting the orthodontist during patient treatments. They are also qualified to perform basic procedures and address some of our patients’ dental concerns. Emily joined our team in 2012 and has since completed her Certificate III in Dental Assisting. She has over seven years of orthodontic dental assisting experience and is passionate about advancing and up-skilling in the dental field.

Besides liking piña coladas and getting caught in the rain, Emily enjoys the beach, swimming and playing touch football.

Georgie is the newest member of the Ocean Orthodontics team. She still has a solid dental background with a Certification III in Dental Assisting and over ten years of experience. Georgie has a passion for healthy teeth and beautiful smiles.

In her spare time, Georgie loves being with her family, walking her dog on the beach and supporting her son who plays soccer.

Jan Vautin

Practice Manager

Dr Vautin and Jan have been married since 1979 and she has been involved in the practice since its inception in 1990. Prior to this, she gained extensive experience in providing administrative support services to various departments at Princess Alexandra Hospital including the Medical Superintendent. She then transitioned to managing specialist medical practices on Wickham Terrace in Brisbane.

She has a Certificate III in Dental Assisting and a Certificate IV in Dental Radiography. She regularly attends conferences and seminars with Dr Vautin to ensure that the practice is always on the cutting edge.

Caroline specializes in both our office management and treatment co-ordination management. She was trained in hospitality by major hotel chains in Sydney and joined our practice in 1998.

Caroline is on-hand to assist with any information you may need regarding financial or health fund arrangements or the scheduling of your treatment.

Maddie Kew

Receptionist

Maddie joined our Ocean Orthodontics family in 2011 after completing Year 12 at St. John’s College and has become an integral part of the team.

Initially, she trained in all aspects of chairside assisting. She is currently involved primarily in our front desk/treatment co-ordination operations, but she occasionally returns to assist Dr Vautin in the treatment area. She is also trained in intra-oral scanning on our IteroⓇ 3D scanner. As a past patient, she is happy to answer any questions on the wearing of braces.

Emma Bailey

Senior Dental Assistant

Emma, a local Sunshine Coaster, originally joined Instyle Orthodontics in 2003, but left us to explore Canada for two and a half years. She then rejoined the team on her return to the Coast and helps to ensure the treatment area is running smoothly.

Emma has attained her Certificate III in Dental Assisting and has over seven years of experience in assisting Dr Vautin. She is also available to assist with any questions regarding the care and cleaning of your braces.

Alli Wroe

Dental Assistant

Alli joined us at the beginning of 2013 to train as part of our clinical staff. She is very skilled in assisting Dr Vautin in all aspects of patient care including chairside assisting, sterilisation and educating patients in the care and maintenance of braces.

As a previous patient, she has undergone braces and knows exactly what is involved at every stage. She is more than happy to answer any questions you may have about wearing braces.

Danielle Mellish

Dental Assistant/Treatment Co-ordinator

Danielle joined our practice in 2012 after completing Year 12 at Sienna College for a “gap year.” That gap year turned into many years when she decided to postpone her university studies and stay on with our team.

Initially, Dan trained as a chairside assistant, but she is also trained in treatment co-ordination roles. She can usually be found in the treatment area helping Dr Vautin to provide a great experience for our patients.  As a past patient, she is also happy to answer any of your questions about braces.
