Problems we can solve
Uneven spacing
Large gaps and unequal spacing between your teeth can make you feel self-conscious about your smile. Wide spaces between teeth could also negatively affect the way you speak and eat. Gaps may be caused by having missing teeth, or teeth that are disproportionately too small for your mouth.
Crowding
Crowding occurs when there is insufficient space for all of your teeth. Your teeth naturally shift as you age and you may experience more crowding as you get older. Crowded teeth are hard to clean and up twisted out of alignment. This increases the risk of uneven enamel wear and chipped teeth.
Underbite
An underbite results from having a lower jaw that is longer or bigger than the upper part of your mouth. All of the lower front teeth overlap the front of the upper teeth and may even close down deeply over them.
Overbite
Can you feel your lower front teeth biting into the roof of your mouth when you bite down? This could be a sign that you have an overbite.
Open bite
An open bite is when your upper teeth and lower teeth do not meet when you bite down. This commonly happens in children who have a thumb-sucking habit.
Crossbite
Upper teeth are supposed to overlap the lower ones slightly. This is the most comfortable and functional alignment. In a crossbite, the situation is reversed and one or more lower teeth may close down over the upper teeth. This can potentially lead to issues such as uneven jaw growth or uneven enamel loss.
Overjet
Front teeth that protrude outwards are classified as overjet. This is different from an overbite in which the front teeth close down too far over the lower teeth. In an overjet, there is an excessive amount of horizontal distance between the upper and lower front teeth. Overjet can be caused by either a genetic discrepancy in the size of the lower and upper jaws or due to the misalignment of the upper front teeth.
Twisted or tipped teeth
Besides bite alignment issues, orthodontic treatment can also help remedy problems in individual teeth. One or two teeth might be tipped too far inwards or outwards or twisted out of healthy alignment. Sometimes, a tooth can end up out of alignment because there is an empty space nearby.
Impacted teeth
Impacted teeth are ones that did not emerge from the gums into straight alignment. Teeth can become impacted when their path is blocked by crowded or malpositioned teeth. Braces can sometimes help draw an impacted tooth into healthy alignment with the rest of the teeth.

Questions about your first appointment at Ocean Orthodontics, Maroochydore
What will happen on my initial visit?
This appointment is all about gathering the information we need to assess your orthodontic needs and plan your treatment. We will ask you questions and take pictures of your smile. Then, one of our orthodontists will conduct a complete oral exam to determine if and when to start your treatment. Before you leave, we will provide you with a full outline of your treatment plan and payment options so that you can make an informed decision.
What if I choose not to start treatment after visiting you?
Your first consultation comes with zero obligations. We hope that your first consultation will at least give you a better understanding of your oral health and orthodontic needs so that you can make a treatment decision later on.
Who will I meet?
You get to meet one-on-one with our orthodontist at your first visit. You will also meet many of our wonderful team members including a Treatment Co-ordinator. The Treatment Co-ordinator will be your personal assistant, explaining what you can expect, walking you through every step of your treatment plan and answering all of your questions.
If I want to start treatment right away, what happens next?
The orthodontist who evaluates your teeth, bite and smile. They will explain your treatment options and let you know when you can begin. Invisalign® is a treatment that can sometimes be started on the very day you come in for your first consultation. Your orthodontist will tell you if Invisalign® is right for you and if you are ready to start your treatment right then.
Will you take photos or x-rays?
If you are able to bring recent x-rays from your regular dentist, we will ask you to do so. We will take all other diagnostic images necessary so that we have a current and accurate picture of your dental health and orthodontic needs.
How long will my first appointment take?
Plan to spend close to an hour with us for your first visit. While your future checkups with us should not take that long, we need to take our time getting to know you and your unique orthodontic needs.
Can I accompany my child to their first appointment at Ocean Orthodontics?
Yes, in fact, we encourage parents to join their teenagers and children on their first visits with us. Orthodontic treatment can support your child’s oral health and development. We recommend that you attend the consultation so you can fully understand your child’s treatment needs and speak directly with the orthodontist.
